I was just browsing over at the war-historical newsgroup and found this tantilizing little message from Norm Koger himself. Norm was replying to a thread where someone asked the question about what people would do if they had access to the TOAW source code...

*****

>I'd add hex-side rivers.
>
>Oh WAIT, Norm already did that but we CAN'T HAVE IT.

All may not be lost. I heard from Chris Mate at Take-2 over the
holidays, and the current official line now seems to be that they will
be happy to release any updates I have. Since I heard that I've been
snowed under with work, but I plan to look through my archives to see
just what updates I had actually tested enough to release before
putting the code to bed. It's been so long since I looked at the stuff
that I'm not quite comfortable with just lobbing all the updates I
have out there. Hopefully I can find the time to look into this
sometime this week.

While I'm making one of my not-too-frequent visits here: Two of my
projects are now within a few months of release. I still can't really
say much about one of them, but my first pass at describing the other
can be found at http://home.austin.rr.com/normkoger/RJW.html. I
believe we will be making official announcements about the other in
the next month.

A glimmer of hope indeed. Nice to hear this from the man himself. I thought that it was funny that he said he would get to the patch when he had the time. You mean for the past couple of years he has actually been working on other things; he hasn't been just quietly waiting by his phone and computer for Take-2 to give him the green light so he can release the patch at a moment's notice? :cheeky:

Still, the cynic in me says I'll believe that there will be a patch when I can download it!

FYI, Norm later hinted in this thread that the "mystery game" was some 3D-type game in the vein of Age of Rifles. I'll quote the man himself in an attempt to avoid strange rumors. Here is a portion of his post from usenet. He was responding to a request for more information about the "mystery game:"

Well, it's not really a matter of deliberate mystery. The "other
project" involves a couple of other guys, and I don't feel free to
give too much away without their explicit approval. Suffice it to say that Age of Rifles fans may have something to celebrate sometime this year, if they don't mind real time 3d and the same kind of operational/tactical back and forth mentioned in the naval engine. I can say more about the RJW game because it's my "mental health" project. My friends may choose to opt in if they wish, but they aren't saddled by whatever I say if they choose to opt out.

Quite frankly, a naval wargame is not the first type of game I would play. But, after spending the past two years playing TOAW,
any game that Norm Koger designs in the future I will buy. It could be pong, hangman, tic-tac-toe, etc. I'll be shelling out my dollars to get both new games. The prospect of him having complete control over a future game is particularly encouraging.

Ignorant question: what exactly are benefits of havng "hexside rivers?"

It looks better, and is more intuitive as to where to digin to take advantage of a river line.

I was raised in Vancouver, but ehhhhhhhhh.
In any case we are still doing what we can although it amounts to letting T2 and Koger work it out at this point. As I said on the other thread we'll put up whatever info we get asap. There's been hope all along as it seemed clear to me both sides were willing. Its hammering out the details that is the issue and that is between them obviously

Daniel

Vancouver, eh? Well, that's not so bad then!

If Take 2 is willing to wrap Norm's patch, then most likely we'll have something tangible in the future; time being the only constraint. After all this time, I can understand Norm wanting to go over previous work.

If we actually do get a patch I think we should all put as much effort into thanking those responsible as we did in actually turning up the pressure.

You've got that right, Don. This would be like a late Christmas present... (And a good one at that!)

What up with the elephants? You want some crazy Asian/African scenarios? That could be neat... lol

..Elephants...PO intervention in pbem games..it's the only troop type that HAS to have the possibility to be run by a third party, for when it goes crazy and smashes your own troops..that leads to PO control of formations etc, but "elephants" is a more amusing way of putting it..,
