For the May Strategy & Tactics video game thread, let's hold the inaugural discussion on Sid Meier's CivIII.

The purpose is for all who are intimately familiar with CivIII to share their knowledge, skills and abilities with the rest of us, in all matters of the games' play; to help others with a particularly vexing game scenario; to serve as a general introduction to the game for those who may have never played it.

Screenshots will also be very welcome here as you illustrate your point/problem, just please make them an easily seen size.

I'd like to open this one myself, with a question about the tech tree. Do you follow the same progression through it, no matter what civ race you are playing? Or, just how important is a certain course through the civ advances to each race?

I'll vary it depending on when the unique units pop in. I usually play the Greeks, Persians, or Russians (scientific with another trait for that extra advance -commercial is nice- every age!). I tend to be primarily defense, so getting to Hoplites (or Immortals for an 'offensive defense') is important. After that, it's a race to get Cavalry, Riflemen, and Armor and pick up as many 'useful' Wonders as possible no matter who I'm playing. I'd have to say my strategy is fairly similar 90% of the time.
