View Full Version : Battlefield: Vietnam
Anyone played this game yet? I took a look at it and want to get it, but first I wanted to hear what other people thought of it.

Let everyone know what you think if (when) you buy it - it sounds interesting.
Thanx :toast:

Is the single-player game up to much? Since I'm living on a secret island base, I only have dialup and so any opportunity to play multiplayer is going to be strictly limited. I read that there was a single-player option, but heard it wasn't worth the effort.

I love this game, it's a lot of fun, and runs a lot better than BF1942 (while looking better). There are some realism issues, but generally that's done in favor of gameplay. I would not suggest buying this unless you can play online. The single player is really just a chance to play with some bots to get used to the game and try weird stuff until you go to play online.

Thought that might be the case. Sigh... Thanks for letting me know anyway. Saved me some cash.

Online gaming is so much fun. You really should get a better modem. I buy games to play online. If the box dont say MP requirements on it, I dont buy it.

I found this in my Sunday paper... this guy truly has has no clue...

I think somebody forgot what the word 'game' meant. Since when are games obligated to delve into the morality of their subject matter? Since when should a game that takes place in a morally ambiguous setting (according to the writer) be required to tackle the issues? Dare I say it (and be accused of hypocracy from my ranting elsewhere), but this is truly the bleeding heart liberal media.

Agreed - if you want to learn about the moral issues in the Vietnam war, go and read a book.

Yeah, that was rather... interesting...
It's so much that games are incapable of dealing with morality, but that's not the point of that game. It's not presenting a story. There is a game in development Brothers In Arms I believe, that is going to present a much more human aspect of World War II. However, asking a game devoted to multiplayer game to develop the morality of being involved in Vietnam is pointless. I could see the criticism if the game presented much more controversial aspects ("How do you shoot women and children?" "Easy.. you just lead 'em a little less!") but it presents simply straightforward combat.
Hmm, you know, I played a scenario of Steel Panthers III that didn't present me with the moral issues of Vietnam. Man, I'll never play that again, giving me just good tactical action and no morality!
In a more serious note, I do feel that games have matured to a point of being considered an art form, much like movies are. I'm not saying every game out there should be considered "art" but I feel they are capable of adding something to society in the same way a quality movie does. However, I do think it's right to expect every game to provide some great insight on society. The core reason people buy games is to have fun, admittedly that's essentially the same reason people watch movies, for some emotional benefit, but the difference between the mediums inherently have different requirements. A movie can place in morality much easier than a game can. And to ask a multiplayer ACTION game which functions solely on gameplay between other players (you see 'em, you shoot 'em) is just pointless and unfair, and completely ignores the value of the game.
