I have been alerted to the fact that Norm Koger recently updated his web page (a rare treat for us!)...illustrating and updating his new project based on the Russo-Japanese naval campaigns of 1904-05 (tentative release Q2/2004). Read about it on his webpage.

Norm is just one amazing guy...
I tried many naval battle games, but they all failed me .. (yes, they fail me... not the other way around)... it became an impression for me that Naval battles are nearly impossible to model well in games...
Well, maybe this line will soon be smashed by Norm Almighty as well :)

It does look interesting, though. I've had some success at naval warfare, mostly on boardgames. I've not seen a very good rendition done on the computer, either, excepting it's done arcade-style. Norm is a very reputable name, and I think we can expect something well done.
Norm made the first wargame I ever played on the computer. It was Red Lightning for the Amiga. However, that was the only game by Norm that I've enjoyed. To technical.....to much number crunching and usually not very pleasing to the eye....IMHO.
As for Naval Wargames.....not that big a fan of those either, but I have playtested 3 for John Tiller and HPS. Guadalcanal, Jutland, and Tsushima.....(Tsushima deals with the very subject of Norms next game)
They are pretty decent games......perhaps you should check them out. www.hpssims.com

I'm an avid PC wargamer and have to agree that for me the top wargame companies are HPS and Matrix. Those three games you mention are good as well as the Panzer Campaign series.
I am a big fan of Norm's games. It seems like every time one of his games comes out. I will look for it at the local computer store. But sadly, all the stores around here in Houston are only interested in the frag fest "real time strategy." I have the opportunity to be able to take my laptop to work with me and am able to spend most of my days playing games. My favorite has to be the TAOW series. I am trying to find the Century of War version. I know it was out only for a short while. Can anyone help me in locating a copy?

My first naval computer game was Grey Seas, Grey Skies (modern naval combat) for an Apple 2c (no graphics, just text). Played two SSI games for the Apple but I can't remember their names. Action Stations was a good game. The interface is now dated (doesn't use a mouse) but the graphics hold up. They represent a tactical screen, not a 3d picture of the ship(s). A lot of detail.
I think the problem with pre thru ww2 naval games is the lack of "control". Sailing ship games and big gun games come down to a little maneuver and once the shooting starts not much else. Carrier games are a little better (just reloaded Carriersat War 1 and 2). The board Game Ironclads was a lot of fun. Harpoon 3 (modern naval warfare) is goos since it covers subs, surfaces, and air on a grand operational scale (the entire med).

Only ONE place on the net to buy TOAW:ACOW anymore. Be prepared to pay premium. You will have to click on "PC" section, then go all the way to the bottom. It is tucked in nice and neat.
Take2Games (http://www.take2store.com/)
That would be a great collection to add. Can't find it in Canada though. Anybody?
Awesome to see that Norm's going to retain control of the engine this time 'round. I can only imagine what TOAW would look like if it had never left his hands...
Sigh.
Hopefully, after some time has passed, and Norm has had the opportunity to work on various other designs he's pondered, he'll revisit the TOAW 'style', and creat Millenium of Warfare of something of the ilk. To see something like that done with all the little things that we've had on wishlists for the past so many years... Baby, it would have to be Xmas!
