hello,

i'm thinking of buying one of these games: East Front, West Front, Europe in Flames or World at War. i know they are somehow related to one another.

which one is worth buying? i heard Europe in Flames consists of East Front and West Front. is it so? what about World at War?

is there East Front II? what are the differences between these games?

cheers

Hello Marcin,

The basic games in TalonSoft's Campaign Series are West Front, East Front II and Rising Sun. There is also Divided Ground which covers the Middle East Wars. The original East Front that you mention predates West Front, East Front II and Rising Sun. East Front is not compatible with any of the present Campaign Series games.

Europe in Flames is West Front and East Front II combined together in a value pack. Europe in Flames also includes the West Front expansion pack Operation Sea Lion.

World at War is West Front Gold, East Front II Gold and Rising Sun Gold combined together in a value pack. West Front Gold is the original West Front plus the West Front expansion pack Operation Sea Lion. East Front II Gold is East Front II plus the East Front II expansion pack Fall of the Reich. Rising Gold is Rising Sun plus the Rising Sun expansion pack Rising Sun Imperial Strike.

Additionally, East Front II Gold includes 5 additional scenarios from TalonSoft's web site, while Rising Sun Gold includes 12 additional scenarios from TalonSoft's web site.

As for which one is the best, that depends on your intentions and your budget. One note: Custom Scenarios created for East Front II and East Front II Gold may not be compatible with each other. East Front II can be patched to version 1.02, while East Front II Gold is version 1.03. You may want to have both games.

What I recommend is that you buy World at War and the original, stand alone East Front II. That should provide you with the maximum flexibility and gives you everything that TalonSoft produced (minus Divided Ground).

If you can't find the original West Front or East Front II in software stores, you can buy the original West Front or East Front II from Global Star Software at the following URL: http://www.globalstarsoftware.com

I have seen Europe in Flames and World at War on sale in the bargain section of software stores for as little as $ 9.99. The original West Front, East Front II and Rising Sun can also be bought for $ 9.99 on sale.

I hope this answers your question and gives you a starting point.

World at War absolutely!

I am amazed that World at War is still popular and on sale as a mainstream game in stores even after all these years.

I fully agree with ML, go for W@W. It has the latest version of all the games. Once you get into CS, you'll inevitably want to play around with each of the series.

If you're a buff of WWII history, your reading/viewing will probablly take you across diffent battles that you'll want to either play out. And if the battle's not provided with the software, trying to recreate the battle is always fun. The generous flexability of these games allow you to let your imagination run wild! I've seen recreations of squad type battle (CS is built for platoon-level play but is adaptable), Viet Nam battles, the somalia battle from Black Hawk Down, etc. Buying W@W gives you practically full scope to explore (DG not included)!

If for no other reason, you can pick it up for $10. I saw it at Electronic Boutique and MicroCenter a year ago.
